Claude Code in one sentence
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent — a Claude-powered CLI and IDE-integrated tool that operates as a peer engineer inside your repository, reading code across files, making changes, running tests, and committing under explicit human review.
Unlike autocomplete-style assistants that suggest the next few tokens, Claude Code engages at the unit-of-work level: a developer describes intent, Claude Code produces the implementation, the developer reviews and approves. The change-set discipline is closer to peer engineering than to autocomplete.
What Claude Code actually does
Claude Code reads your repository at depth — not just the file you are editing but the cross-file context that matters for the task. It can:
- Generate new functions, modules, and files from a natural-language requirement
- Refactor existing code across multiple files with reasoning about call-sites and side-effects
- Write tests that exercise the actual surface of your code, not toy assertions
- Run those tests, read the output, and iterate on failures
- Commit changes with clear, scoped commit messages
- Open pull requests with structured descriptions ready for review
The operating model is engineer-as-reviewer, Claude-as-producer. The engineer describes intent, scopes the work, and reviews the change set; Claude Code produces the implementation, runs the tests, and prepares the artefacts for review.
How Claude Code is different from autocomplete
Autocomplete tools (Copilot, original tab-completion) operate at the token level — they predict what the developer would type next, given a few lines of local context. They produce a 10–20% productivity uplift, which is meaningful but incremental.
Claude Code operates at the unit-of-work level. It takes a requirement ("add JWT-based authentication to this Express app") and produces a change set. The productivity uplift is structurally different — 30–60% on greenfield work, 15–30% on legacy refactoring — because the engineer's time shifts from typing to reviewing and architecting.
The security and governance posture is also different. Autocomplete tools largely operate on the file in front of the developer; Claude Code reads the broader codebase. Anthropic enterprise contracts include data-handling provisions that govern this access.
